Ostrý provoz

A question on Facebook yesterday in the Czechlist group: Why is "ostrý provoz" ostrý?

Being unfamiliar with the phrase, I hadn't asked that question. Here are some examples of how it's used (taken from the CZES corpus), not that they answer the original question.
  1. Do ostrého provozu jsme spustili nový eshop s notebooky značky Hewlett Packard na doméně www. ...
  2. Ostrý provoz bude v Kolíně zahájen v únoru příštího roku.
  3. Po několikaměsíčním vývoji a testování spustil Explorer 10.8.2003 do ostrého provozu novou automatizovanou platformu správy služeb.
  4. Ostrý provoz však podle zkušeností uživatelů zatím trochu drhne.
  5. Slyšte, slyšte, projekt vchází do třetího měsíce ostrého provozu již s mnoha uživateli a texty.
  6. V ostrém provozu by mohlo být v prosinci.
  7. Kdyby se mělo jednat jenom o to, jak dlouho tady ti lidé dokáží vydržet sedět, tak si myslím, že by už existovaly první úpravy nové verze, která by běžela něco přes měsíc v ostrém provozu.

odsoudit k/na 10 let

There must be a reason why k is used instead of na. But concordances are not helping me. Any suggestions anyone?

  • Krajský soud v Plzni ho však včera odsoudil na pět roků ...
  • Okresní soud v Mělníku Heka odsoudil na tři a půl roku za mřížemi ...
  • Státní soud mě odsoudil ke dvaceti letům těžkého žaláře ...
  • Íránský zvláštní soud pro duchovní odsoudil ke třem a půl roku vězení v ...

This seems cute:
...takže jsem sám sebe odsoudil k deseti letům řidičské abstinence

usuzovat escaped my notice

This nifty little word has been somehow overlooked. The English notions it aligns with are assume, infer, conclude, deduce.

Corpus: czes
Hits: 2667 (5.7 per million)

Stop press:

  • quite uncommon in first person singular. usuzuju 22 times only.

It frequently follows lze (458)

lze usuzovat which would be like the English one could infer ... It's like the passive in that the subject is "avoided".

And followed by že (268) as it is in English,  more or less.

  • Podle dobových obrazů lze usuzovat, že jim bylo vcelku jedno, jestli ...
  • Z toho lze usuzovat, že mohlo jít o korupci.

z (141) and not necessarily with lze

  • Na novou sociální doktrínu vlády lze usuzovat z programu ODS, ...
  • Usuzovat z toho na začátek sestupu jeho hvězdy by bylo nicméně předčasné.

usuzovat na (102)

The accusative object of na is the thing that is infered. English infers/concludes etc something. Czech uses a prepo. So according to Google translator, this sentence from the CZES corpus.

  • Již z povrchního dojmu - tedy z počtu vydaných knih - by se dalo usuzovat na autorčinu nestřídmost a na to, že o svém psaní nemá příliš pochybností.

becomes
  • Even from a superficial impression - that the number of published books - one could infer the author's self-indulgence and that of his writing is not much doubt.
And
  • Podle velikosti a způsobu letu usuzoval na dva druhy. becomes Depending on the size and method of flight, figured the two species. This seems to missing a subject: the ole nevyjádřený podmět.
  • Na základě teplého počasí těchto dní nelze usuzovat na globální oteplování, vždyť v prosinci byly třeba v Rusku výrazné mrazy. becomes Based on the warm weather these days is not a reliable indicator of global warming, after all, in December were in Russia to be strong frosts. which is a bit messy.
So dear readers, if you have any comments on the use of this word, Relearning Czech is all ears. BTW I thought the Cz equivelent of that idiom was jsem celé uši but I do not see it in my sources. Something else to relearn. Nekonečné.

jdoucí

Finally got my log in for CNK. Whilst reading the info page about SYN2010, I came across the phrase, tři po sobě jdoucí časová období. Context suggests it means consecutive for which I guess I have used následný.

More interesting however, is the word jdoucí which I never use. It declines as normal adjective ending í.
It has 422 hits in CNK.

The TAGSET uses the poziční systém which is detailed here. It is similar to the one I knew all those years ago used by the Retrogradní slovník.

Even though there are only 8 word forms of the 422 joudcí hits, there are 41 different tags employed, 17 being used between 11 and 40 times each.

224 are followed by prepos up to 3 to the right: typical going prepos.

Only 4x jdoucí po sobě. e.g. ... které obsahují obě slova jdoucí po sobě.
